The objectives of the research are to clone, sequence and characterize parts of the genome of a new rhabdovirus isolated from fish in Finland, and to study the pathogenicity of rhabdoviruses in fish cells. The aim of the pathogenicity studies are to elucidate virus-host cell interactions using several different fish rhabdoviruses and several permanent fish cell lines. We are studying rhabdovirus induced apoptosis and induction of cytokine-like substances in fish cells as a response to rhabdovirus infections. The research metods include cell culture, and different techniques in molecular biology and cell biology.
